Paul Hymers has been a Building Control Officer since 1984, having worked for several local authorities in Kent. A qualified Chartered Building Engineer he published his first book in 1999 on Home Extensions having witnessed hundreds of home extenders stumbling into the same pitfalls he realized that all of the DIY books at the time were years out of date and did nothing to guide homeowners who were employing builders and tradespeople to carry out building work and simply wanted to understand and control their projects.
The success of his first title prompted seven others, and inspired other surveyors in the industry to write similar guides and expand the genre.
Along with his books, he has written numerous magazine articles for various home improvement and self-build magazines including Home Building and Renovating https://www.homebuilding.co.uk/author/paul-hymers Build It, Move or Improve and Which? for the consumer association.
His first book Home Extensions, was first published by New Holland in 1999 and has been regularly updated with new editions ever since. It has sold over 45,000 copies to date. The current edition is published in colour by Fox Chapel Publishers. Home Extensions and other titles have regularly been in the top ten bestsellers for DIY/Home books in Waterstones, Borders and online bookshops as well as the Nielsen bookscan charts.
Paul has also appeared on BBC Radio Kent and presented seminars and workshop advice sessions at Self-Build Exhibitions in the UK.
